Berkhamsted Castle

A castle constructed from flintstones bound together using a very robust lime mortar.

Becket was constable of Berkhamsted till he was sacked from this position by Henry II. During his time as its constable he seems to have been a perpetual improver of his/its estates: he greatly increased the amount of money every year submitted to the King's Treasury.

The annual farm as recorded in the Pipe Rolls for Berkhampsted was £37 in 1156, £70 in 1158 and £77 in 1159.
